The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa. Kenya lies across the equator in east-central Africa, on the coastline of the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the northeast, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, and Sudan to the northwest, with the Indian Ocean running along the southeast border. It is twice the size of Nevada. The country is named after Mount Kenya, a very significant landmark and the second highest mountain in Africa. Nairobi being the capital and largest city. The Land area of the country being 219,788 sq mi (569,251 sq km); with total area being 224,961 sq mi (582,650 sq km), the estimated Population as per 2007 is 36,913,721, the growth rate being 2.8%; the birth rate: 38.9/1000; infant mortality rate: 57.4/1000; life expectancy: 55.3; density per sq mi: 168. The capital and largest city as per 2003 estimate is Nairobi. The common languages are English (official), Swahili (national), and numerous indigenous languages. The ethnic races in the country are Kikuyu 22%; Luhya 14%; Luo 13%; Kalenjin 12%; Kamba 11%; Kisii 6%; Meru 6%; other African 15%; Asian, European, and Arab 1%. The religions followed in the country are Protestant 45%, Roman Catholic 33%, indigenous beliefs 10%, Islam 10%, others 2%. The major trading partners of the country are Uganda, UK, U.S., Netherlands, Egypt, Tanzania, Pakistan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, India, China, and Japan. The industries in the country are small-scale consumer goods like plastic, furniture, batteries, textiles, soap, cigarettes, flour, agricultural products, oil refining; aluminum, steel, lead; cement, commercial ship repair, tourism. Agricultural products of the country are tea, coffee, corn, wheat, sugarcane, fruit, vegetables; dairy products, beef, pork, poultry, eggs. The natural resources of the country are limestone, soda ash, salt, gemstones, fluorspar, zinc, diatomite, gypsum, wildlife, and hydropower. The major ports and harbors are Kisumu, Lamu, and Mombasa. Kenya has three International airports Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, Moi International Airport in Mombasa, Eldoret International Airport (local flights and cargo only). The train service only operates between Nairobi and Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret. All neighboring countries can be accessed through roads including Ethiopia via the border town of Moyale, Uganda via Busia, and Tanzania via Namanga. |
